“I Eat”

Commissioned by Carnegie Hall for Audra McDonald, this song was performed as part of a song cycle entitled “The Seven Deadly Sins,” and was based on the sin of Gluttony.

“The Seven Deadly Sins” premiered by Audra McDonald on June 8th, 2004 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall. Chamber orchestration and music director, Ted Sperling.

A wistful and hypnotic song that made the craving for food (”I eat, therefore I am”) seem sad compensation for loneliness, a quality Ms. McDonald conveyed in her achingly vulnerable performance.”
